Ogliastra, located in the eastern part of Sardinia, is a region that fascinates with its ancient history, deep-rooted traditions, and authentic culture that can be felt in every corner. This wild and unspoiled land offers an unforgettable journey between past and present.

The History of Ogliastra

The name "Ogliastra" probably derives from "Olivastro," referring to the wild olive trees that characterize the landscape. One of the ancient names of this region is "Trigonia." This fascinating term may derive from the Greek "trigonon," meaning "triangle," perhaps referring to the geographical shape of the region or the three main ancient settlements.

Ogliastra has a rich and complex history, marked by the first Nuragic settlements, with their mysterious stone towers, and by Phoenician, Roman, and Byzantine influences. Each civilization has left its mark, still visible today in archaeological sites, monuments, and local traditions.

Traditions and Culture of the Ogliastrino People

The people of Ogliastra are proud of their traditions and culture, handed down from generation to generation. Folk festivals, religious celebrations, and fairs are fundamental moments for the community, during which ancient rites and customs are rediscovered and experienced.

- Religious Festivals: Religious celebrations, such as Holy Week and the feast of Sant'Andrea in Tortolì, are deeply felt. These events combine faith and tradition in an atmosphere of great devotion and popular participation.

- Fairs: The fairs are moments of conviviality and celebration. You can taste typical dishes such as "culurgiones" and "porceddu." The bread and cheese fair in Ulassai is one of the most famous.

- Handicrafts: Handicrafts are fundamental to Ogliastra's culture. Fabrics, carpets, woven baskets, and filigree jewelry are skillfully produced by local artisans. Each piece tells a story and represents a cultural heritage of inestimable value.

- Music and Dance: Traditional music, with instruments such as the launeddas, and traditional dances, such as the ballu tundu, are vivid expressions of Ogliastra's culture.

The Life of Shepherds

Shepherding is a central element of life in Ogliastra, a tradition that dates back thousands of years. Ogliastra's shepherds lead a life deeply connected to nature and the seasonal rhythms. Transhumance, the seasonal movement of livestock between winter and summer pastures, is still a living practice.

The life of a shepherd is made up of sacrifices but also of a deep bond with the land and animals. The shepherd rises at dawn, takes care of the flock, leads it to pasture, and oversees milk production, which is then used to make typical cheeses such as pecorino sardo. This activity requires knowledge, experience, and a great passion for one's land.

of the Artisans

Ogliastra's artisans are custodians of ancient working techniques, handed down from generation to generation. Their skilled hands create works of art that tell the story and culture of this region.

- Weaving: The production of fabrics and carpets is one of the oldest arts. Using traditional looms, artisans create unique pieces that often represent symbolic and geometric motifs.

- Basketry: The creation of woven baskets is another deep-rooted tradition. Using natural materials such as rush and dwarf palm, basket makers create useful and decorative objects.

- Filigree Jewelry: Filigree work is a delicate technique that requires precision and patience. Artisans create finely decorated jewelry, often used in celebrations and traditional costumes.

A Journey into the Heart of Ogliastra

Visiting Ogliastra means embarking on a journey through time, discovering the roots of a land that has managed to preserve its identity. The beauty of the landscapes, the richness of traditions, and the warm hospitality of the local people make this region a unique place to explore.

If you are looking for an authentic experience, where history, nature, and culture blend in perfect balance, Ogliastra is the ideal destination. Come and discover the magic of this land, let yourself be fascinated by its stories, its traditions, and its timeless beauty.
